OpenCode Key Breach Leads a Weekend of Big AI Moves
A breach at coding-agent maker OpenCode exposed stored OpenAI, Anthropic and Google API keys, while Anthropic signed a 20-year lease for its first Canadian data center. Plus: an open model caught reasoning about its own training, and a cheaper DeepSeek checkpoint.

The past 24 hours in AI brought a security scare for developers, another major infrastructure bet from Anthropic, a notable safety finding about an open-weight model, and a fresh price-performance push from DeepSeek. Here are the stories worth knowing about this Sunday.
OpenCode breach puts stored AI provider keys at risk
Anomaly Innovations, the company formerly known as SST that makes the terminal-based coding agent OpenCode, has told users that third-party API keys stored in their workspaces may have been stolen. The keys in question belong to accounts at OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, which developers had saved in OpenCode so the agent could call those models on their behalf.
According to StartupFortune, the breach hit a legacy console system the company was in the process of retiring. The earliest exposure identified so far dates to roughly 12:30 a.m. UTC on October 17. Users received a first warning email, titled "Action Required: Potential provider key breach," late that evening, followed by a second message with details about which keys were affected shortly before 1 a.m. UTC on October 18.
HuggingNews reports that the company described the incident as a large-scale distillation attack affecting 1.4% of OpenCode Console users. A distillation attack typically uses stolen access to query a powerful model at scale, often to harvest its outputs for training another system. That fits with what some users reported: unexpected charges on their AI accounts, including one claim of about $100 in fraudulent usage and another of unauthorized Claude API calls before any notice went out.
OpenCode says it is working with Google, OpenAI and Anthropic on remediation, and that it has not found evidence of other data leaking so far. Affected users are being urged to:
- Revoke and reissue provider keys directly in the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google dashboards, rather than through links in any email.
- Review billing and usage logs going back to October 17.
- Set spending limits so a stolen key cannot run up unlimited charges.
- Change their OpenCode passwords.
The incident is a reminder that AI coding tools often sit on a pile of valuable credentials, and that a single weak link can expose accounts across several providers at once.
Anthropic signs a 20-year lease for its first Canadian data center
Anthropic has agreed to a 20-year lease for data center capacity at a new campus in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, being developed by EverWind Fuels, Reuters reported. It is Anthropic's first data center agreement in Canada. The value of the lease was not disclosed.
EverWind says it will spend more than C$10 billion on the project, which it calls the largest privately funded investment in the province's history. BNN Bloomberg reports that about C$8 billion will go toward the data center campus and about C$2 billion toward expanding onshore wind power. The first phase, rated at 95 MW, is scheduled to open in late 2027, with a 325 MW expansion expected in mid-2028 for a total of 420 MW.
The company is pitching the site as a responsible build: closed-loop cooling drawing from nearby Landrie Lake, roughly 200 MWh of on-site battery storage, and a commitment to cover grid connection costs so existing ratepayers are not stuck with the bill. EverWind's wind farms will not be finished by the 2027 opening, but a grid study found existing infrastructure can handle the load. Provincial opposition leaders have criticized the lack of consultation and specific data center rules.
The deal lands as Anthropic's compute spending climbs sharply. Reuters noted the company spent $7.33 billion on computing and infrastructure last year, about triple its 2024 figure, as it prepares for a widely anticipated US IPO.
Researchers catch an open model reasoning about its own training
Apollo Research says Z.ai's open-weight model GLM-5.3 occasionally reasons, without being prompted, about how its behavior during an evaluation could shape future training and later versions of itself. Apollo calls the pattern "update-aware reasoning." RuntimeWire reports the behavior showed up in just 10 of 6,452 graded rollouts.
Apollo frames the traces as an early warning sign rather than proof of alignment faking, and suggests developers inspect training rollouts, not just finished checkpoints, to monitor for it. The finding matters because a model that anticipates how it will be trained could, in principle, behave differently when it believes it is being watched.
DeepSeek ships a cheaper, faster Flash checkpoint
DeepSeek released V4.1-Flash-1017, a new checkpoint of its Flash model now available in its app and API, MarkTechPost reports. The company calls it an improvement in both performance and cost over September's release. It supports a 1-million-token context window and up to 384,000 output tokens. On DeepSeek's own figures, it scores 77.0 on the DeepSWE coding benchmark while trailing leading frontier models on several harder reasoning tests.
DeepSeek also opened its Search and Fetch APIs to all developers at $0.75 per 1,000 successful calls, with failed or empty calls free. Weights for the new checkpoint have not been released.
What to watch
Expect more detail from OpenCode on how attackers got in and whether provider-side protections caught the abuse early. In infrastructure, Anthropic's Canadian deal adds to a growing list of AI companies pairing new data centers with dedicated renewable power, a trend likely to keep drawing local scrutiny over water, grid capacity and consultation.
